When I first started painting in watercolor I finally understood why I'd never liked oils: I'd been instinctively using them in a manner better suited to watercolor, lifting off the paint to create highlights rather than piling on the whites. Even in watercolor you have to be careful with your pigment choices and papers if you want to work this way; some pigments grab the paper and won't let go even when scrubbed. I don't have many of these in my palette. My choices tend to settle like the colored earths they are, lifting easily and making glazed layers a bit hair-raising. When it works, it feels like drawing with light.
