JC Leyendecker's never-quite-imitated way with paint, and with light, has always rung a bell with me. His figures are so weird, yet so vividly present and sharply formed, with their intense theatrical lighting and their shamelessly geometricized stylings. Then there's that signature linear hatching he gets away with; an original! I can do without the endless naked babies and their goonish faces, but can't keep my eyes off the lit-up stuff in his unmistakable images. He's my target for the next while…
