We're not going to visit family this Thanksgiving, which we'll miss, but it's a long haul from Oregon. Instead, I think I'll create a short series of paintings over the holiday weekend about freeway driving in the US, based on photos taken while traveling to and from Virginia (where the clan gathers) and Connecticut when we last lived on the East Coast. Thanksgiving was the most likely occasion for such a trip and we always chose the inland route, away from the crush of traffic on the main coastal artery connecting New York, Baltimore and DC in favor of the always amazingly empty and almost entirely rural Route 15 through and near Harrisburg, Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry, Leesburg, Manassas. It's a lovely, peaceful ride through all that Civil-War-haunted country.
